In Ladner, on the south side of the Fraser River, west of the Highway 99 tunnel, a mystical flat walking trail loops under a canopy of trees around the marsh. Amongst the trees, you will be delighted to discover wood carvings created by a local artist. This talented Spirit Ninja created these carvings to get people out of the house and explore with open minds. Some carvings are marked with inspirational words and one of the carvings is a trading post where you can leave a small toy and take one in exchange.
Enjoy a scavenger hunt by finding all the carvings shown below.
The trails are open from 8am until 5pm (8pm May 1 – September 30). The fallen trees near the path are a reminder to avoid the area on windy days. The trails can be muddy after the rain so bring your boots if it has rained recently.
Dogs are permitted on a leash as long as you bring your own cleanup bags. A garbage can is conveniently located at the entrance.
Free parking is available on the street outside the two entrances to the Ladner Marsh Trails, just south of the boat launch at the end of Ferry Road. This road earned its name as it was the landing location for the ferry between Ladner and Richmond before the completion of the George Massey Tunnel in 1959 provided a new way for cars to cross the Fraser River.
At the west end of the loop trail, follow the elevated boardwalk to a wooden tower. From the top of the tower, you will have a panoramic view of the marsh and the Fraser River. If you look up, you may see a great blue heron, a bald eagle, or possibly a fairy. If you look down, you may see other animals in the marshes, such as beavers, raccoons and rabbits.
If you look very closely near the river, you may even find the mysterious buried car! Explore these trails and see what you can find.
Some friendly fairies have recently found homes in this forest on Ferry Road. Can you find their fairy doors?
Many years ago, the marsh was a popular space to gather in the evening. Cars often got stuck in the mud. There is at least one car that was abandoned, sinking deeper over time. See if you can find what is left of it!
